Employee Spotlight!

Our January spotlight of the month goes to Mike Goodman, Senior Software Engineer, Technical Lead. The spotlight recognizes Mike’s commitment to Brace Software’s Engineering Success. He talked to us about how Brace has contributed to his professional growth as well as his impact on Brace.

What is your position and what does that entail? *

I’m a senior backend engineer and technical lead. That means I get to plan, build, and work on a lot of the fun backend systems we have here (like our APIs and loss mitigation rules engine) and to enable everyone else to do the same. It’s mostly work in Java with some dabbling in Elixir, with a whole lot of Jira and Slack in-between.

Tell me about your career before joining Brace and how you ended up here. *

Prior to Brace I’ve worked as a developer largely in e-commerce, shipping, and logistics at places with pretty small development teams, usually working with C#, Python, and JS. I’ve also worked on a few political campaigns, including my own local run in 2017.

While browsing Hacker News I saw a Brace job listing posted on a “Who’s Hiring?” thread and I was immediately sold by the mission and the culture. After meeting the team and talking to the CEO, and hearing more about what we’d be working on, I signed up right away.

What is an exciting project you have been working on recently? What is your proudest professional accomplishment at Brace? *

We’re expanding on a servicer task generation and management system that has been pretty interesting to work on.

I’m pretty proud of laying the groundwork for our waterfall QC output, our client data delivery system, and our credit bureau integrations. But I think I’m most proud simply to be a helpful part of our team, to be an unblocker and multiplier where I’m needed.

What is your favorite part of working at Brace? *

My favorite part of working at Brace is 100% the team. It’s an absolute delight to work with the folks here, and it’s a testament to our product, vision, and hiring that we can get so many thoughtful, insightful, funny, warm, diverse people together to work on this product. Even working remotely, everyone’s personality and intelligence shines through, and although communicating is a bit more difficult it’s still a pleasure.

What is something you would want others to know about Brace? *

I hadn’t worked in Fintech until I joined up at Brace, and I’d heard a lot of negativity about the industry. I can say with confidence and glee that none of that is true here. It’s a deeply human business full of very compassionate people trying to solve real problems and help real people who need it.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working? *

I like to work on programming side projects a fair amount, and I like to fiddle poorly with my guitar. I’m trying to get better at sewing and homebrewing, as well. I’ve liked video games since I was a kid, and I’ve always enjoyed reading (lots of eastern Roman history lately). And I’ve somehow managed to make spreadsheets and data hoarding into a hobby, too. I kind of like to be busy. I mostly just allow myself to get distracted by and interested in whatever passes my way. It makes life more fun.
